A2

70 basic root verbs and modifying verbs in German

This lesson keeps all 70 verbs from the original source intact and reorganizes them into 3 groups that are easier to learn: verbs that take Dativ, verbs that use Genitiv, and verbs that take both Dativ + Akkusativ at the same time.

#akkusativ#dativ#genitiv

First: why does this lesson cause so much confusion?

Many learners know the meaning of a verb but use it incorrectly because they don't remember whether the verb takes Akkusativ, Dativ, or another special structure. This is a very common mistake at the A1-A2 stage. If you master this group of verbs early on, building sentences will feel far more natural and accurate.

The big picture

  • Most German verbs take Akkusativ; this is the default group for a great many basic sentences.
  • A small but very frequent group takes Dativ, for example helfen, antworten, gefallen, gehören, zuhören.
  • Some formal verbs take Genitiv, but in modern conversation they are usually replaced with an easier structure.
  • There is a group of verbs that take two objects: one Dativ and one Akkusativ, for example geben, zeigen, schicken, erzählen.

Group 1: 43 verbs that take Dativ

This is the group that causes the most confusion, because many people think in Vietnamese or English and unconsciously use Akkusativ. Learn them as fixed phrases: jemandem helfen, jemandem antworten, jemandem zuhören...

Group 2: 8 verbs that use Genitiv

This group appears less often and is usually found in formal writing, literature, or administrative language. You should know it so you can recognize and understand it, while in everyday conversation many of these structures can be replaced with simpler ways of speaking.

Group 3: 19 verbs that take Dativ + Akkusativ

This group is very important in everyday communication because you will meet it constantly: giving something to someone, telling someone a story, writing something to someone, sending something to someone. Learn them with the pattern: jemandem etwas geben, jemandem etwas sagen, jemandem etwas zeigen.

When a sentence has two objects, the familiar order is Dativ before Akkusativ. However, if one of the two is a pronoun, the order can change depending on context. This is a point to watch out for when you start writing longer sentences.

How should you study this lesson?

You don't need to memorize all 70 verbs from the original lesson in a single day. But you should learn them by their correct groups, because each group represents a different grammatical logic. Once you recognize a verb's pattern, building sentences becomes much easier.

Kannst du mir etwas Geld leihen?

Can you lend me some money? mir is Dativ, etwas Geld is Akkusativ.

Sie erzählen uns die Geschichte des Films.

They tell us the story of the film. uns is Dativ, die Geschichte is Akkusativ.

Mẹo học nhanh

Don't try to learn all 70 verbs at once. Split them into 3 groups: basic Dativ, Dativ + Akkusativ, and the less common formal group. Learning 5 verbs a day with 1-2 sentences each is far more effective.
