5 steps to use a dictionary effectively
- Choose the right type of dictionary for your learning goal.
- Read the introduction to understand the structure and symbols.
- Learn the common abbreviations you will encounter.
- Understand the pronunciation guide before looking things up too deeply.
- Start looking up words systematically rather than just reading the Vietnamese meaning.
Important notes
- A German-Vietnamese dictionary should mainly be used at the A1 stage.
- From A2 onwards, practice using a German-German dictionary to grasp meanings more precisely.
- Online dictionaries are very convenient because they offer pronunciation, examples and frequent updates.
- When you look up a word, always pay attention to the article, the plural, synonyms, antonyms and separable verbs.
- Keep a notebook of new words so you can review them quickly during the day.
