Overview
What is TELC?
TELC is a European language certificate system that evaluates language ability against the CEFR. For German, TELC offers several levels and is commonly chosen for study, work, vocational training, family reunion, or other Germany-related plans.
At IECS, learners get advice on a study and exam path tied to a real outcome — not just drilling tests, but practicing real-life German use.
TELC is often considered alongside other German certificates such as Goethe-Zertifikat, TestDaF, or OSD. Depending on the program, school, employer, or authority, candidates should verify exactly which level and certificate is accepted before registering.

Why TELC
Why do many learners choose TELC?
TELC suits learners who need a clearly structured certificate that measures real ability and can be prepared in stages. The points below summarize the main reasons.
Tests all four skills
TELC evaluates listening, reading, writing, and speaking — fitting for learners who need a German certificate for studies, careers, or German applications.
Aligned with CEFR
TELC levels follow the Common European Framework of Reference, from A1 to C2 depending on goal.
Widely recognized
TELC certificates are commonly used for study abroad, vocational training, family reunion, and other German-related needs.
Strategy-friendly prep
You can break preparation down by skill — drill writing, build speaking reflexes, and get used to exam-room pressure.
Flexible exam dates
When a session fits, candidates can prepare paperwork, choose a level, and plan their study time before the exam.
Fits Germany applications
TELC is often weighed for study, vocational training, Au-pair, family reunion, or proof of German ability.

Scoring
Pass thresholds apply to total and per-section scores.
For TELC B1/B2, candidates typically need a minimum percentage as set by the exam. Writing and speaking are scored separately, so unbalanced prep can raise the risk of not passing.
If a section is not passed, candidates may need to retake it per the test provider's rules.
Some TELC sessions allow candidates to use passed sections within a fixed validity to retake the missing section. Specific conditions depend on the test provider and notices at registration time.
| Grade | German name | Reference score range |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | sehr gut | 270-300 points |
| Good | gut | 240-269.5 points |
| Satisfactory | befriedigend | 210-239.5 points |
| Pass | ausreichend | 180-209 points |
Max score and pass mark
TELC B1/B2 typically has a max of 300 points. The reference pass mark is 180 (60%), with separate requirements for writing and speaking.
Section pairing
If you've already passed one of writing or speaking, you may be allowed to retake the missing section within the validity window. Specific conditions follow the exam notice.

Exam day notes
Get ready before TELC day
- 1Arrival time
Arrive on time per the exam board notice. Late arrivals may be considered no-shows and may not get a fee refund.
- 2ID document
Bring valid ID/passport so the proctor can verify identity. Forgetting or refusing to show ID may cause refusal of entry.
- 3Study materials
No dictionaries, textbooks, sample papers, notes, or review materials in the exam area, including breaks between sections.
- 4Electronic devices
Phones, smart watches, smart glasses, and electronics must be stored as instructed and not used during the exam.
- 5Food and drinks
Light snacks for breaks are fine. Inside the exam room, bring only a clear bottle with the label removed if the board allows.
- 6Writing tools
The board usually provides the necessary tools. Read the notice carefully before exam day to avoid bringing the wrong items.
- 7Speaking section
Speaking is usually paired, with separate prep time. During prep, do not communicate with each other and leave drafts as instructed.
- 8Companions
Companions should not enter the exam area during the exam. Pick a waiting spot outside to avoid disrupting the process.
Study materials
What materials should you prepare for TELC?
Choose materials by skill goal, not just stack of papers. Identify your weak skill, then combine sample papers, topic vocabulary, sample writings, and paired speaking practice for steadier scores.
- TELC sample papers at the right level to get used to question types and timing.
- Topic vocabulary for daily life, study, work, and common situations in Germany.
- Sample essays, idea structures, and a checklist of common Schreiben mistakes.
- Speaking topics, paired dialogue samples, and Mündliche Prüfung scoring criteria.
- A practice tracker to spot which skill is dragging your total down.
Appeal
When to consider a TELC appeal?
If your score is close to the pass mark or you feel it doesn't reflect your work, look up the appeal process per the test provider's instructions. Appeals usually have a deadline, a form, and a processing fee if applicable.
IECS can help you read the result notice, check appeal eligibility, and prepare clarifying questions before contacting the test provider.
